Euthanasia, active and assisted suicide

Euthanasia and assisted suicide laws around the world

Recently I read a blog; the title was “who would be holding your hand?”  The blog is about this man’s girlfriend or friend, not too sure because he is vague and has made me confused as he mentions contacting an ex-girlfriend as he was missing that “someone”.  The smallest of intimacies, and yet to me the biggest, like holding hands.  Also this woman made him promise that he would not look for his soul mate and she would send him someone.

The woman was diagnosed as terminally ill, and was in extreme pain.  She made the decision to end her life.  The writer of the blog was there for her and they held hands.  This gave him a wonderful feeling.

Not surprising as touch is so very important.  Without touch a baby fails to thrive.  Even in the animal kingdom, touch from a mother helps development.  Not just emotional development but physical development.

I have only admiration for the writer and the woman that choice to end her life.  The courage for both of them must have been so extreme.

The question is who would be holding your hand when you are dying lead me to a lot of thinking.  To be frank I don’t want anybody to be at my death bed.  I don’t want to burden the people I love.  I don’t want the last memory of me to be on my death bed.

Some years ago my father was dying of cancer.  In South Africa there is no such thing as being able to be assisted or giving euthanasia to end one’s life.  My father was in terrible pain and the doctors had literally washed their hands.  He was dying and they could not do anything more, despite my sister’s pleading.  They turned my father and my sister away from the doctor’s office.

This is a wonderful organization in South Africa.  They come to the home and they administer drugs and give counseling not only to the dying but the living to. They are Hospice.

Hospices deliver palliative care in three main ways:

  • Hospice Home based care - mobile teams of professionally supervised trained community caregivers travel to people's homes and support and teach families to provide care at home. This is the primary means of service delivery for patients who are home-bound. Not only is this cost effective, but it also allows the patient to be at home where they often prefer to be.
  • Hospice Community centres - many hospices work from established bases within the community. At these bases they will meet with groups of people who have palliative care needs. The type of patient who would attend these meetings is still reasonably well and mobile. Doctors, nurses, social workers and other professionals will attend the centres regularly to assist those with individual needs. These centres provide excellent forums for those facing life-limiting illness to connect meaningfully with others in support groups. At many such centres, a variety of skills are also taught and income generating projects initiated.
  • Hospice In patient units - some hospices have in-patient units. This is a facility that provides 24 hour palliative care. Usually these units have a small number of beds and have specific criteria for admission. A patient who has pain that is difficult to control at home, or a patient whose family need respite, or a patient who has absolutely no support systems at home, are some of those who may be admitted at such an in-patient unit.
My father was very proud and there were so many things he could not do anymore.  The last thing I wanted to do was embarrass him and see him this way.  I know this of all things hurt him more than just dying.  I don’t have the last recollection of him in a death bed.  I remember my father as the wonderful, strong, stubborn and very caring person that he was.  He never went passed a person that needed help, without helping in some way or another.  Of cause there were also the negative side to him.  He had an awful temper but the bad comes always with the good.
He could do anything he set his heart in doing, even if it took him hours, days, months and even years.  It was a challenge never to let slip pass.  This is has passed on to me and I am so glad he did.  Nothing is impossible and you heard the saying, “where there is a will there is a way”.
Countries around the world and how they regard assisted suicide, active suicide and euthanasia.
    Netherlands
They were the first country to introduce assisted suicide and euthanasia in April 2002.  Though, the following conditions must apply.  The patient must be suffering unbearable pain, their illness must be incurable, and the demand must be made in "full consciousness" by the patient.

    France
Assisted suicide and euthanasia is illegal in France.  In 2005 the LĂ©onetti law introduced the concept of the right to be "left to die". Under strict conditions it allowed doctors to decide to "limit or stop any treatment that is not useful, is disproportionate or has no other object than to artificially prolong life" and to use pain-killing drugs that might "as a side effect, shorten life".

    United States
Euthanasia is illegal but doctors are allowed to prescribe lethal doses of medicine to terminally ill patients in five US states.  Oregon was the first US state to legalize assisted suicide. The law took effect in 1997, and allows for terminally ill, mentally competent patients with less than six months to live to request a prescription for life-ending medication. More than a decade later, Washington State approved a measure that was modelled on Oregon's law. And last year, the Vermont legislature passed a similar law. Court decisions rendered the practice legal in Montana and, most recently, in New Mexico.

    Germany and Switzerland
In German-speaking countries, the term "euthanasia" is generally avoided because of its association with the eugenicist policies of the Nazi era. The law therefore tends to distinguish between assisted suicide (beihilfe zum suizid) and "active assisted suicide" (aktive sterbehilfe).
In Germany and Switzerland, active assisted suicide – i.e. a doctor prescribing and handing over a lethal drug – is illegal. But German and Swiss law does allow assisted suicide within certain circumstances. In Germany, assisted suicide is legal as long as the lethal drug is taken without any help, such as someone guiding or supporting the patient's hand. In Switzerland, the law is more relaxed: it allows assisted suicide as long as there are no "self-seeking motives" involved.  Switzerland has tolerated the creation of organizations such as Dignitas and Exit, which provide assisted dying services for a fee.

Belgium

Belgium passed a law in 2002 legalizing euthanasia, becoming the second country in the world to do so. The law says doctors can help patients to end their lives when they freely express a wish to die because they are suffering intractable and unbearable pain. Patients can also receive euthanasia if they have clearly stated it before entering a coma or similar vegetative state.

Assisted suicide is not mentioned in the law, which does not specify a method of euthanasia. As Jacqueline Herriman’s, president of the Association for the Right to Die with Dignity, says:  "We don't make a distinction in the semantics." However, the physician has to be present at the bedside of the patient to their last breath, unlike the Oregon model where the doctor gives only the prescription of drugs.
This February, Belgium became the first country to legalize euthanasia for children. There is no age limit for minors seeking a lethal injection, but they must be conscious of their decision, terminally ill, close to death and suffering beyond any medical help. They also need the assent of their parents to end their lives. So far, no such cases have yet been reported to authorities.

Canada

The law in Canada is almost the same as in England -- it is a crime to assist a suicide, punishable by up to 14 years imprisonment

Denmark

Denmark has no laws permitting assisted suicide, despite reports that it does.

Finland

Finland has nothing in its criminal code about assisted suicide. Sometimes an assister will inform the law enforcement authorities of him or herself of having aided someone in dying, and provided the action was justified, nothing more happens. Mostly it takes place among friends, who act discreetly. If Finnish doctors were known to practice assisted suicide or euthanasia, the situation might change, although there is no case history.

Italy

In Italy the action is legally forbidden.

Japan

Japan has medical voluntary euthanasia approved by a high court in 1962 in the Yamagouchi case, but instances are extremely rare, seemingly because of complicated taboos on suicide, dying and death in that country.

New Zealand

New Zealand forbids assistance under 179 of the New Zealand Crimes Act, 1961, but cases are rare and the penalties lenient.

United Kingdom

In England and Wales there is a possibility of up to 14 years imprisonment for anybody assisting a suicide? Oddly, suicide itself is not a crime. The first prosecutorial policy statement about who will, or will not, risk criminal charges when assisting a suicide, was announced by England & Wales in 2010. Like France, there are laws banning a publication if it leads to a suicide or assisted suicide. But 'Final Exit' can be seen in bookstores in both countries.

Australia

The Northern Territory of Australia had voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide for nine months until the Federal Parliament repealed the law in 1997. Only four people were able to use it. Other states have attempted to change the law, so far unsuccessfully.

Colombia

Colombia's Constitutional Court in 1997 approved medical voluntary euthanasia but its parliament has never ratified it. Nowadays doctors there frequently do -- discreetly -- help suffering terminal people to die at their request.

Uruguay

In Uruguay it seems a person must appear in court, yet Article 27 of the Penal Code (effective 1934) says: "The judges are authorized to forego punishment of a person whose previous life has been honourable where he commits a homicide motivated by compassion, induced by repeated requests of the victim." As far as is known, there have been no judicial sentences for mercy killing in Uruguay.

Norway

Neighbouring Norway has criminal sanctions against assisted suicide by using the charge "accessory to murder". In cases where consent was given and the reasons compassionate, the courts pass lighter sentences. A recent law commission voted down de-criminalizing assisted suicide by a 5-2 vote.

Switzerland is the only country in the world that allows foreigners to do assisted suicide and euthanasia but active suicide is illegal, whereby these drugs are given over the counter.

You suffered so much, the pain was so unbearable
Yet it was you that was the strong one that kept the family together
You smiled and you laughed and you had time for others
You believed in me like nobody else did
You are gone now and your family are struggling
They need to find a way to come back to each other
But
For me………..
I carry you in my heart forever
For in my heart you live for always
The memories ……………..

LEARNING AND THE INTERNET

Every day we learn something new.

Of cause in order to learn we have to be prepared to put some effort into it.

Where do we go to learn about things that we want to know about?

Of cause, the internet.

ALL these webpages are there as people have put up there own post.  So if you looking to find information to confirm what you think is right, you will obviously find it.

Also you will find the opposite to your own thinking.

I was recently looking up information on how to determine the age of a kitten that I had find in my garden.

Do you think I could find this information?  Yes I did but it was conflicting to what I know from previous experience in raising less than one day old kittens.

The thing with kittens they are like human babies.  Each kitten developes at their own rate.

The vet I went to who has gained his knowledge from study put the kitten roughy at the age of 5 to 6 weeks, which I knew was incorrect.

In other words the information gotten from the internet could only been taken as a guideline, in this instance.

The kitten was refusing to drink from a bottle.  I thought there might be an a medical reason for this.  Then again I do not know why this kitten was left unattended by his mother.  Did his mother abandon him as mother cats will not keep feeding her babies when she knows there is no future for them?  Or did someone just dump the kitten there, knowing that I would take it and care for it?

The vet gave antibiotic and a vitamin, and deworming tablets.

For two days the kitten suckle from the bottle and then stopped.  Feeding the kitten was like force feeding it.  At work I gave the kitten the other quarter of the deworming tablet that the vet had given.  To be given every third day.

I could not even manage to force feed him afterwards.  When I got home later. He appeared very very tired.  I thought nothing of it.  Later I woke up to find the kitten not responsive at all.  Breathing was very erratic.

I called up my best friend and he was at a loss.  The kitten was dying before my very own eyes.  My friend looks up the kitten condition on the internet and told me what to do.

I had to make a solution of sugar and water, syrup would be better, and put this solution on his tongue and gums every 2 minutes.  If I left it longer than this I might not even bother trying.

It took several hours and the kitten was starting to respond and move.  I could then use a syringe and get a  ml in his mouth.

The kitten survived, Thanks to the caring of my best friend and the very good post on the internet.

Keep posting you will never know how your posts might help someone like me.

Personal experience as well for the worst thing is to feel that we are alone though we are not as there are others that go through what we have gone through and shared experience can half the weight we carry

Democratic Alliance – Emfuleni faces power cuts due to outstanding Eskom debt

Democratic Alliance – Emfuleni faces power cuts due to outstanding Eskom debt

Eskom recently announced that residents will be faced with routine electricity supply interruptions. This comes as the municipality fails to repay its Eskom debt.
I call upon the Gauteng Human Settlements MEC, Paul Mashatile, to intervene as this is a clear indication of the financial disarray at Emfuleni. While we make this call, we are not confident that action will be taken given that Mashatile prefers spending his days doing ANC work, instead of the work the people of Gauteng pay and expect him to do.
Eskom has taken a decision to implement electricity interruptions that will commence from 8 March 2018, following non-payment. The DA understands that the entity has made numerous representations and submissions to appeal to the municipality to pay its debt, however this landed on deaf ears. This while the mayor of the Municipality clr Khawe, claimed that the municipality has abided by the repayment arrangements made with both Eskom and Rand Water, during his last address to council.
The electricity supply interruptions will result in daily scheduled disconnection at the following times:

Week 1 (Starting 8 March 2018)

Monday to FridaySaturday and Sunday
06:00 – 08:0008:00 – 11:00
17:00 – 19:3015:00 – 17:30

Week 2

Monday to FridaySaturday and Sunday
06:00 – 09:0009:30 – 12:00
17:00 – 20:3015:00 – 18:30

Week 3

Monday to FridaySaturday and Sunday
06:00 – 20:0006:00 – 20:00
The Emfuleni Municipality is under severe strain due to financial maladministration. As such, the municipality has failed to keep to the repayment arrangements made with Eskom as well as with Rand Water and is now failing to deliver on these basic services as a result.
This municipality continues to prove that the ANC is only concerned with enriching itself instead of serving the people.
It is about time that the residents of Emfuleni vote for a party that prioritises their needs. The DA is the only party that can bring about Total Change and put a stop to ANC maladministration.

A DA-led government will ensure that services are delivered, corruption is dealt with and jobs are delivered.

The three R' s in Education South African Parliament

G

Sweeping and mopping

About 12 weeks ago I was watering the garden and I heard the sound of a kitten crying.  I investigated and found not one kitten but 5.  ALL the kittens were soaked to the skin.  I took them inside and dried them.  They could not been older than a day.  Their eyes were closed and their ears channel' we'e not opened.  Where the umbiical cord was had not healed.  I took to raising these kittens.  I never did see their mother.  Lots of cats came and go in my garden but the majoity of them are males.
These kittens are now 12 weeks old.  When they were smaller I started to use the brush on them.  They loved it so when either I mop or sweep they go crazy.  They want to be brushed.

How to increase your page views on Blogger, go on restricted web sites and much more

How to increase your page views on Blogger, go on restricted web sites and much more

I write blogs and one point when I started, the number of page views went to my head.  I remembered when I was blocked on going on facebook at work, the first thing that I did was to try and find a way around it.  I did but stopped doing it as I promised not to go on face book at work.

Someone I knew had got the company name I work for from facebook.  They googled the name of the company and found my boss email address.  They started emailing him and their actions nearly cost me my job.  Because of this I asked them at work to block my facebook.

Although the Internet is available for everyone, not all websites are available for all the people across the globe. Sometimes you can find regionally restricted sites, blocked YouTube videos and much more on the internet. For instance, if you try to browse Spotify from India, you will get an error message, whereas it is live and working website in the US.

There are many different sites that one can use.  These sites do not show your geo-location or IP address.

I used these sites to add to my number of page views.  I did not in the least feel good about this and I took my page view counter app of my blog.

I know that someone has been doing this to my blog and I am asking them to stop this.  I don’t need to have a large number of page views.  It means nothing to me.  I am using the blog as a sort of therapy.  Writing ones thoughts and feelings does help.  Learning about different things also helps.

For those that want to increase their page views and also to get large numbers like others do.  The following web sites are good.  Some of these web sites do up to 6 and they are from different parts of the world.

What has love got to do with it?

What has love got to do with it?

The reason for the title of this blog, what has love got to do with it?  When one loves and the love is returned, we know it in our hearts.  We feel so many different emotions.  Our outlook on the world is so much different. We can do anything.

It’s all got to do with how we feel, our emotions and when one gets confused and starts expecting different things from the person that loves us.  Things have a downward swing.

For in all honesty love should never be about ourselves.  Love is unselfish……..

Love is not materialistic and so many of us see love this way.

Give from the heart …………

I have a saying

Things or people that really matter come with a price …….

Anyone or anything that matters is worthy of that price

Love is involuntary.  Brain science tells us it's a drive like thirst.  It's a craving for a specific person. It's normal, natural to "lose control" in the early stage of romance.  Love, like thirst, will make you do strange things, but knowledge is power.  We were built to fall in love.

To me the ability of been able to love stems from when we are born.  If there is no love from a mother, then as we grow up, we ourselves are unable to give or receive love.  To us it might be love but how do we know if we are truly giving or receiving love?  I think that denial of a mother’s love does so much damage and sometimes it can never be reversed.

LOVE is every child right when they enter this world.  A mother’s love is so different from any other type of love.

What is the meaning of a mother's love?

A loving mother is a lot more than that. A mom is someone who is there for their children, who loves them no matter what. Who will lay down their life for their children? It's a selfless sacrifice and a mom isn't a mom by just giving birth, but a mom can be a mom to any child even if it's not their child.

Being a parent is not easy.  What we do and don’t do can have consequences far into the future. Do we think what sort of adult our child will become?

Can you remember back to all the people that you have been close to? Lovers, friends and even family members that seem to have a side to them that is really problematic?  That always leads to arguments and disagreements? You wonder what the hell made them like this.

More than often the route of all their problems, stem back to their mothers and father.  They did not receive love from their parents, or too much love?  Parents are not there when they are needed.  Parents are not involved enough.

Characterology was developed by Wilhelm Reich.  This is to categorise people into 5 different groups according to their experience in the family structure.

1.  The unwanted child, a child who felt unwanted, usually by the mother, tend to transfer the perceived hostility into the choices they make themselves and it extends into their relationship.

2.  The needy child, a child that was often adored as babies, but as they grew, and became “people” they were discarded emotionally, left to cope on their own.  This let them to become excessively needy and demanding.  Or they developed an aversion to their neediness.

3.  The endurer, are children of controlling parents.  The child constantly doubts herself or himself, and they have to have their parents’ guide them.

4.  The controller, are children of parents that judged and belittle them.  The parents make them something they themselves want their children to be.  The child them only concentrates on this and hides who they truly are.  These children have a talent to manipulate or get love but deep inside they are crippled with insecurity and self-doubt

5.  The perfectionist, are children that was continually rejected by the parent of the opposite sex and possibly also of the same sex.  https://pixel.watch/e03fThe parent is more likely to be a perfectionist themselves.  The child learns that it is unsafe to love sexually with an open heart.  The child will not put herself or himself in a situation that will lead to painful outcomes.

Touch in a child’s development, how important is touch later on with our romantic partners.

Did you know that when your baby is born its’ sense of touch is one of its best developed senses?  Of course it isn’t fully developed at birth, but the new-born can certainly feel touch better than what they can hear, see or even taste!

A study released on October 8, 2013 confirms the importance of human touch to healthy brain development. Researchers in the UK found that loving touch characterized by a slow caress or gentle stroking increases the brain's ability to construct a sense of body ownership and plays a big part in creating and sustaining a healthy sense of self.

Much like the instinct to lovingly pet an animal, gently touching another person is a reflexive gesture that happens automatically in healthy, loving relationships between a parent and a child, romantic partners, and affectionate close friends. We all know from first-hand experience that being touched makes us feel safe and comfortable in our environment.

A child that is loved right from the start grows up to be a well-adjusted adult who in turn loves unconditionally.  Love is all about emotions that we feel; the different levels of emotions we feel depend on who we are.

The following words that are used with love, Communication, forgiveness, intimacy, respect, compassion, companionship, trust and loyalty.  These things are things that should be present when one loves another. A healthy love - that will survive anything.  Above all else is friendship.

Needless to say all these words apply to any love, so what makes romantic love the thing we as people seek?

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE; where love is given no matter what.  It does not matter how many times another person disappoints us, or embarrasses us, or hurts us to the core; that love is there forever.

SELFLESSNESS is the underlying theme of existence. It’s the glue that holds the world together, and it is, in fact, what we mean by the term ‘love’. Indeed, if we consider religious terminology, the old Christian word for love was ‘caritas’, which means charity or giving or selflessness;

ADMIRATION

1.  a feeling of wonder, pleasure, or approval.

2.  the act of looking on or contemplating with pleasure:

admiration of fine paintings.

3.  an object of wonder, pleasure, or approval:

The dancer was the admiration of everyone.

To me admiration does not fall into the word category for love.  To have admiration for another, because of who they are, what they overcome and what they do in their lives does not make us loved by them or even the reverse.  I would say if someone says to you that they still admire you, that once they loved you and they were waiting to be loved in return, but that never happened.  Either they stopped loving or they started to pretend that did not feel that way anymore.  To truly love, is to have that person still around, to be able to participate in that person life, even if they just on the outskirts.

LOYALTY

With your partner you would want to be faithful to him or her in every way possible.  Loyalty goes beyond fidelity.  Loyalty includes being honest about your thoughts and feelings and being committed to your partner.

One cannot be loyal to a partner if one is not honest with oneself.  When you disloyal to your partner, you’re just fooling yourself.  You have to be transparent, hones and loyal to yourself in order to be loyal to your partner.

Loyalty includes emotional fidelity.  One does not physically have to cheat to be disloyal to a partner.  If you flirt with another, or falling for someone else, your are being unfaithful to your partner.

Loyalty means never hiding anything from your partner.

Loyalty means sharing everything with your partner.

Loyalty means never telling white lies.

Loyalty means staying with your partner through sickness and health, in good times and bad times.  Be the solid rock that your partner can always count on, no matter what!

IDEOLISED PERCEPTION

We all have an idea what love should be and when we actively seek romance and try to force a relationship, they will rarely work out the way we want them to.  We then feel unwanted, hurt and disheartened.

Love comes when we stop looking for it.  It just happens!

COMPANIONSHIP

Trust is very essential with companionship and trust must be there for good sex.  Sex is never as good as when there is love.  After sex a feeling that something is missing, something is not quite right, when love is not present.

To be a truly loving, a relationship would need to work on a number of levels.  Spiritually, mentally, physically and emotional.  They are all woven and balanced with caring and companionship.

Companionship can be better than sex ……………..

NURTURING

A relationship cannot work on its own to survive.  It needs care and nurturing of two adults, giving in a way that creates a mutual beneficial connection.

Communication falls under nurturing.  The more you communicate, the closer you will be.

Walking out that door without working on the problem will not lead to happiness.

Doing things together, that brings enjoyment.  What you both like doing and can do it together.

Sharing difficult times with your partner and making self-correcting moves and involve your partner.

Compliment your partner, give emotional support and make sure you there no matter what.

Share goals and dreams, working together to achieve them.

Have the desire to be together.  Desire each other.  If the spark has gone, there are ways to rekindle it.  All one has to do is try.

Wither the storms together with compassion, acceptance and forgiveness.

That is what a relationship is all about!

Experiencing different things will bring a couple together.  Make the bond stronger.

TOLERANCE

Put up with the other partner.  This can be it is very difficult.

Retaliation is not a very good thing.  It causes so much hurt.

Manipulation is something; we humans are a master at this.  We use guilt, disappointment, fear and anger.

Admit to mistakes and let go of their mistakes.  Try some understanding it goes a long way and brings more joy into ones live.

ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance of others can be much easier than accepting ourselves.  Accepting ourselves can help us accept traits and quirks in our partners.

SELF COMPASSION

This can help us enhance our relationship with others and especially with our romantic partners

BOUNDARIES

Setting up boundaries was considered a bad thing.  To define a boundary, “the line where I end and someone else begins”.  When the boundaries are clearly defined and respected, one does not need to put up walls.  In a healthy relationship the partners “ask permission”, take the others feelings into account, show gratitude and respect differences in opinion, perspective and feelings.

In less than healthy relationships, partners assume that their partner feels the same way they do.  They ignore the fact that is violating their partner’s boundaries.

Boundaries are very critical especial in a romantic relationship.  The reason is partners inhabit each other’s most intimate spaces, including physical, emotional and sexual.

Communicate your boundaries that work and don’t work.

When another person says they love you, what does it mean?

I guess in order to understand love, one has to recognise there is many different loves, and depending on the person, how deep and true it goes.

A woman saying to a man that she loves him does not necessary mean that it is a sexual love and that she wants to stay with him forever.  She could mean it as loving just as a friend.

A man that says he loves a woman is prompted to say so as he is physically attractive to her and has a sexual relationship with her.

Love for our children and our parents

Love between siblings

Love between family members

Love for animals ( I mean the 4 legged variety and not the 2 lol)

Romantic Love – between two people or opposite sex or same sex

ATTACHMENT

Attachment theory is a psychological model that attempts to describe the dynamics of long-term and short-term interpersonal relationships between humans. However, "attachment theory is not formulated as a general theory of relationships. It addresses only a specific facet": how human beings respond within relationships when hurt, separated from loved ones, or perceiving a threat.

There is danger when attachment is regarded as true love.

I have noticed that people are scared to be alone, that they will settle for second best instead of waiting for the right person to come alone.  I know we don’t know when this is going to happen that means that we need to socialize and have people around us that are just friends. Have a life to live, places to go, friends to visit, hobbies and become all-rounder.

The main problem is people look for someone to complete them but in reality if we are lacking in ourselves, we cannot give completely in a relationship like we should.  We first need to work on ourselves so that being alone is something we don’t think anything wrong with.

We all need to feel special and that is just not one in a relationship.  The little things can break or make a relationship. Most importantly we need to make the other person feel very special.

I do know this that any relationships, wither is between siblings, friends and especially romantic love, have to be worked on continually.  Both people in the relationship are constantly changing, and both needs to keep on what is occurring in the other person’s life.

Maybe we are unhappy with our selection, but when something happens and we lose them.  We then realize what we have lost.
